What Is an Agentic Workflow?
An agentic workflow is a process in which an AI model takes multiple steps autonomously - planning what to do, using tools (web search, code execution, API calls, file reads), executing actions, evaluating results, and iterating - without a human approving each step. The model acts as an agent pursuing a goal, not just responding to a single prompt.
A simple chatbot answers questions. An agentic workflow might: research a topic online, write a report, check it against a style guide, revise it, and save the final version - all in sequence, triggered by one instruction.
Core Patterns in Agentic Workflows
ReAct (Reasoning + Acting): The model alternates between reasoning about what to do next and taking an action. It writes out its thought process before each tool call, which improves reliability.
Tool use: Models are given access to external tools - web search, calculators, databases, APIs, code interpreters - and learn to call them at the right moment.
Multi-agent systems: Multiple specialized agents collaborate, with one orchestrator agent delegating subtasks to worker agents (e.g., a researcher, a writer, a fact-checker).
Reflection and self-correction: The agent evaluates its own outputs and tries again if the result doesn’t meet the criteria.
When Agentic Workflows Are Reliable
Agentic workflows work best when:
- Tasks are clearly defined with measurable success criteria
- The action space is constrained (limited set of tools)
- Failures are recoverable (retrying is cheap, mistakes are reversible)
- The task can be broken into discrete, verifiable subtasks
They fail more often when tasks are ambiguous, tool errors cascade, or the agent gets stuck in loops. Current LLMs succeed at ~80–90% of steps in well-designed agentic systems - meaning a 5-step workflow might fail 10–50% of the time without error handling.
Human-in-the-Loop vs Fully Autonomous
Most production agentic systems include checkpoints where a human reviews before irreversible actions (sending an email, deleting a file, making a purchase). Fully autonomous agents are appropriate only for low-stakes, highly reversible tasks.
